The FDA warning letter to Purolea Cosmetics Lab is the first in U.S. drug cGMP history to cite a violation related to over reliance on artificial intelligence. It should serve not just as a mandatory case study for every drug, biologics, and device manufacturer, but as a clear and immediate warning. AI is a powerful assistant, but treating it as a substitute for qualified human oversight and regulatory knowledge is now officially a cGMP violation.

Why Caution Is Non-Negotiable: The Core Risks Exposed by This Case

AI Does Not Own Regulatory Accountability: The Manufacturer Does

The FDA was crystal clear: “If you use AI as an aid in document creation, you must review the AI generated documents to ensure they were accurate and actually compliant with cGMP.” Failure to do so violates 21 CFR 211.22(c), the Quality Unit’s core responsibility. The company used AI agents to draft drug product specifications, SOPs, and master production records, and failed to perform any meaningful review. That single lapse turned a potential efficiency tool into a compliance landmine. In life sciences, the Quality Department cannot delegate its legal duty to a large language model. Over reliance of AI in this way is an abdication of responsibility.
