Big changes are at hand with regard to the FDA and regulation of the nation’s food supply. Early in
2009, the nominations of former New York City Health Commissioner Margaret Hamburg as the
new FDA commissioner, and Baltimore Health Commissioner Joshua Sharfstein as deputy were
announced. The FDA has also renewed its push on food regulation as part of a broader effort to
revitalize the agency, experts say. That move includes the FDA’s recent tightening of its Good
Importer Practices.
The move to better control imports and food regulation is part of a “broader piece” to push
accountability up the line among manufacturers, and also for the FDA to show Congress that it takes
this task seriously, says Mark Mansour, an attorney with the D.C. firm of Bryan Cave LLP. The FDA is
saying that not only will they inspect and enforce more, but that manufacturers are also counted on
as the “first line of defense,” he adds.
